All investing and trading classes are taught online with instructor-led training. Some courses will also be offered in a traditional classroom-based and instructor-led environment once COVID19  limitations expire.  This series of classes teaches you how to build your wealth by investing in financial market securities using proven strategies and rules to keep you safe. Go from learning or refreshing on the basics to performing advanced trading according to your individual needs and style.

A College Investing and Trading Program


This program is offered through Everett Community College (EvCC) with courseware developed and taught by Darrel Spayth. 

Each investing and trading class is focused on the most relevant information and skills necessary for you to make effective use of what you learn in that topic area.

To successfully complete a class requires a minimum of 70% attendance, active participation, and completion of investing and trading learning objectives.

NOTE: Some employers offer Educational Tuition Reimbursement for our Investing and Trading Certificate Program. Check with your employer.

To fully participate and gain the maximum value from the stock market investing and trading program, a students will need:

* Homework and Quizzes are optional for students and are not used to determine satisfactory or unsatisfactory (S/U) grade.

** Google provides free Gmail Accounts or you can setup a free Google Account without Gmail. Ask your instructor if you have questions about how to obtain these.

CORE CLASSES for Investing and Trading

1. Financial Market Basics  (expand for more)

Course Description

This 6-hour course provides a straightforward and uncomplicated introduction to financial markets, terminology, investment vehicles, and simple steps for selecting, buying, and managing your first investment. It is geared towards the beginner investor or someone who wants to refresh their basic knowledge of essential foundation concepts that every investor should know. Students will be provided with basic templates to aid in their learning.

2. Investing Fundamentals (expand for more)

Course Description

Retaining and growing your wealth does not happen by accident. This 15-hour course explores developing a suitable approach to investing based on your knowledge, willingness and ability to take on risk, and the amount of time you wish to commit to investing. You will be introduced to fundamental analysis, to value investing, growth investing, income investing, strategy specific investment vehicles, asset allocation, diversification, and you will learn the necessary processes and routines to find and manage your investments. The course will also highlight and share wisdom from well known successful investor strategies. Students will be provided templates to aid in their learning during breakout sessions.

3. Technical Analysis Essentials (expand for more)

Course Description

In trading, timing is critical. This 15-hour course introduces you to visual investing (also known as chart reading or technical analysis). You will learn about trend analysis, market timing clues, market breadth, seasonality, support/resistance, pattern trading, momentum trading, common technical indicators, and how to keep it all together using trading routines and your trading journal. Students will be provided templates to aid in their learning during breakout sessions.

4. Advanced Trading Techniques (expand for more)

Course Description

This 15-hour course focuses on advanced charting, candle trading, popular Technical Analysis styles, inter-market analysis, methods to determine technical price targets, position sizing, stock order types, how to stay on top of your watch list using alerts, entry/exit rules, situational trading (gaps, earnings, IPOs,  etc.), trading systems, advanced scans for finding investments, measuring and tracking your results, and will introduce techniques from some of the popular authors and technical traders. It will also re-enforce routines necessary for successful trading.

5. Investing Certificate Capstone (expand for more)

Course Description

In this 9-hour course you will demonstrate the investing knowledge and skills you have gained throughout the Investing Certificate Program by successfully performing various investing simulated scenarios. Students working alone or in small teams will develop investing and trading plans, establish their investing rules, find suitable investments, perform simulated or actual trades, and record their results. Students may bring in their real-world investing ideas for class evaluation.

Position Trading - Applied (expand for more)

Course Title/Length

Position-Trading Applied (15 hours)

Course Description

This class focuses on the "Position-Trading" style. A position trader is a type of trader who holds a position in an investment for a more extended time, typically from several weeks to many years. Other than "buying and holding," it is the longest holding period among all trading styles and emphasizes larger per-trade performance results. Position-Trading is one of the most profitable investment styles and is more suitable for the trader who has a day-job than shorter timeframe trading. It is central to the methods of well-known traders like William O'Neil of Investors Business Daily (CANSLIM) fame.

This class is a hands-on application and expansion of what you learned in the Investing Certificate Program's core classes tailored specifically to Position-Trading. The goal is to create your trading edge to apply to a "Position-Trading" style. You will be provided with templates and a trading framework to expedite learning and set-up.

This is an elective class for students who have completed the core classes in the Investing Certificate Program or experienced traders who wish to learn this style of trading. If you are in the latter category, you must get the instructor’s permission to be in this class and you should be willing to do some catch-up homework.

Swing Trading - Applied (expand for more)

Swing-Trading Applied (15 hours)

Course Description

This class focuses on the "Swing-Trading" style. Swing trading is a trading style that traders use to buy and sell securities to capitalize on the interim lows and highs within a larger overall trend, usually holding the position from days to weeks. This style is central to the well-known trader and author, Alexander Elder, and described in his book “Trading for a Living”. 

This class is a hands-on application and expansion of what you learned in the Investing Certificate Program's core classes tailored specifically to Swing-Trading. The goal is to create your trading edge to apply to a "Swing-Trading" style. You will be provided with templates and a simple framework to expedite learning and set-up.

Trading with Candles (expand for more)

Trading with Candles (6 hours)

Course Description

This class introduces candlestick charts and patterns into your trading style to provide short term reads on market sentiment.  This may help you anticipate near term price movement for better timing of your entry and exits.

Essential Computer Skills for Investors (expand for more)

Course Title/Length

Essential Computer Skills for Investors (9 hours)

Course Description

This course introduces students to the basic computer skills required by Investors and Traders for organizing their investing business, quickly finding and ranking the best ideas, monitoring investment candidates, tracking their portfolio, etc. 

This class is taught from a Google Apps centric view using the Free version of Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Finance, Google Chrome. However, these skills can also be applied to Microsoft's version of these Apps but require that the student perform any translation where needed on their own.

This is a hands-on class where you learn, then immediately apply what you learned to set-up, organize, and optimize your own personal free Google Account to fast-track your investing and trading. You will be provided with templates and a simple framework to expedite learning and set-up.
